最上級の慣用表現
最上級を使った慣用表現にもいろいろなものがあります。ここでは、高校レベル程度で必要なものをいくつか紹介しています。
「～を最大限に利用する」のような意味で使われます。
You should make the most of the few chances to become a member of the national team.
「日本代表選手になるためには、その数少ないチャンスを最大限に生かすべきだ。」
◆most の代わりに best を使うのは、「困難や不満足な状態等を切り抜ける」という場合などがよくあります。
Mr.Redd made the best of any bad situations. So I think he could acquire enormous wealth.
「レッド氏はどんなにひどい状況をも切り抜けてきました。だから彼は巨万の富を得ることができたのでしょう。」
「とりわけ、何よりも」などの意味で使われます。
Most of all, the sunset over the sea was so beautiful.
「何よりもよかったのは、海に沈む夕日が大変きれいだったことです。」
「どうよく見ても、せいぜい」などの意味で使われます。この逆は at (the) worst です。
This art object seems to be at (the) best a counterfeit.
「この美術品はどうよく見ても偽物のにしか思えない。」

◆ at (the) most は量的なもの、at (the) best は質的なものを表すという違いがあります。
The man was only 160 centimeters tall at (the) most.
「その男は身長がせいぜい160センチくらいしかありませんでした。」
「最もよい状態で、全盛で」などの意味で使われます。
My five-year-old daughter is at her best when she is drawing a picture.
「私の5歳の娘は絵を描いているときが一番輝いています。」
「少なくとも、一応」などの意味で使われます。at (the) most の反対語になります。
At least we 'd better try to persuade them to agree with this plan
「一応は、彼らにこの計画に賛成するよう説得を.試みるべきだろう。」
I feel melancholy at least once a day.
「私は少なくとも一日に一回は憂鬱になります。」
「最も～しそうにない」などの意味で使われます。
North Korea may be the last nation to be welcomed in the world.
「北朝鮮は世界で一番最後に歓迎される国家かも知れません。」
