関係副詞と先行詞の省略
関係副詞は、関係代名詞と同じように省略されることがありますが、関係代名詞と違い、先行詞だけが省略されて関係副詞が残る場合がよくあります。
先行詞が the time, the place, the reason などは、相当程度決まった言葉とも言えるので、一般的にはこれらの先行詞がよく省略されますが、その場合でも、where 以外の関係副詞が省略されることも普通です。
つまりどちらを省略するかは人それぞれであって、口語ではどちらかが省略されるのが一般的です。
Three o'clock in the morning is the time ghosts often appear.
= Three o'clock in the morning when ghosts often appear.
「午前３時は幽霊がよく出てくる時間帯です。」
◆次の文では when が省略されていますが、a moment を省略することはできません。
There is a moment even he shines brilliantly.
「彼にさえ、まぶしく輝いて見える瞬間がある。」
Hiroshima is the place where an atomic bomb was dropped for the first time in the world
= Hiroshima is where an atomic bomb was dropped for the first time in the world
「広島は世界で最初に原爆を落とされた場所です。」
◆次の文では the city を省略することはできません。
Hakata is the city where my father was born and raised.
「博多は私の父が生まれ育った街です。」
The reason he was arrested by the police doesn't make any sense to me.
= Why he was arrested by the police doesn't make any sense to me.
「彼が警察に逮捕された理由は私にはどうしても分かりません。」
◆次の文では why が省略されていますが、no reason を省略すると意味が変わるので、それを省略することはできません。
There is no reason this marvelous song of hers doesn't sell well.
「彼女のこの素晴らしい歌が売れないわけがない。」
Please tell me the way the man does magic tricks.
= Please tell me how the man does magic tricks.
「その人がどうやって手品をしているのか教えてください。」
※ the way は how と共に使われることはないので、いつもどちらかが省略されます。
関係副詞の when, why は、that で代用することができますが、that も省略されることがよくあります。もちろん、関係副詞が省略されれば、それが
that なのかどうかは分かりませんね。
Do you have any reason why(that) you have to deceive your friends?
= Do you have any reason you have to deceive your friends?
「友達をだまさなければならない理由が何かあるのですか。」
